Andy Carroll, back in training but does he have a role in our new look side.
Sams got a dilemma on his hands, When i think of AC and west ham i automatically lump in Nolan as well.
Those days are now thankfuly gone, well as a plan A anyway, the question is, does Andy have what it takes to crack on without him.
The only way i can see it working is to play him up top with ?Sakho and move Valencia to the the point of the Diamond, obviously that leaves out are best player this season, Stu downing.
AC wont be happy with life on the bench, so where does he fit in, to be honest, i think his days are numbered, but its easy to forget what a good player he is, when fit and with a run of games under his belt.
Its a good problem to have, but a problem all the same.

Yes, of course. Apart from the sound knowledge that one or two of the forwards will be injured can you imagine the difference in bringing on Carroll instead of Cole like Saturday?

I'm 'not intelligible enough to see it?'

Ha ha! I can at least see my spell-checker. I'll trust my own eyes when I'm rating a player over yours.

Re: Andy Carroll, back in training but does he have a role in our new look side.
Of course he has a role.

On the assumption we've lost Sakho to injury, third choice striker behind Cole, almost certainly overtaking Cole as he regains match fitness (by coming off the bench).

When Sakho's back, let competition for places sort out their ranking.

Probably need some adjustment to the team as he doesn't have the pace of Sakho, but that doesn't mean reverting to aimless punts in his general direction.

He's not the skill-free lump some like to paint him.

as i've said before us fans must not forget what a poor player he is .anybody who thinks he is capable of the same level of performances as sakho and valencia have put in are fools.

Crosses coming in from Cresswell and Jenkinson,Carroll would have a field day.

Re: Andy Carroll, back in training but does he have a role in our new look side.
We can not allow Carroll to be rushed back in.
We have some easier games coming up now, stick young Lee up there with Valencia first, or Carlton Cole.
Maybe Amalfitano or Zarate.

If need be stick Nolan on as second striker. But Carroll needs development games first, then a few games coming on from the bench.

THEN we can start thinking about putting him into the starting XI.

Re: Andy Carroll, back in training but does he have a role in our new look side.
Agree with that Chigwell.

Hopefully though, he can be eased back into the team over a few weeks. Less pressure on the injury, probably will even improve his mindset and he can progress.

Like others said, he was rushed back last season into a team that had played dog shit for 6 months and suddenly he was treated by Allardyce as the saviour - it was all based around "we'll be alright when he's back."

I hope he's not another Dean Ashton - but hopefully with more options the manager can show a bit of nous and use him appropriately. I think we won't see him back to his best until March time anyway, so there's plenty to go between now and then

Re: Andy Carroll, back in training but does he have a role in our new look side.
Most defenders would fear him in a side which attacks from the wing, which I am glad to see we are now doing.
However it's make or break now for Carroll: transfer to another Prem club is out of the question until he proves he can avoid injury. I am afraid he may be Dean Ashton all over again.

Re: Andy Carroll, back in training but does he have a role in our new look side.
As sam said, Sakho and Valencia don't quite understand the change they've mede since coming in. Maybe they think we've always been playing like this. Add the new full backs to that list.

Truth is, their enthusiasm, along with Song's and Amalfitano's champion's league pedigree, have been a real jab in the arm for the rest of th squad, and they are all playing better than ever as a result.

Carrol could well be the same. He must be itching to get back into this mix.

It'll be great to see him have a go as well. Soon I hope.

These selection problems are what are known as luxury problems.

Re: Andy Carroll, back in training but does he have a role in our new look side.
Depending on the game situation and the opposition - Carroll gives us a truly spectacular Plan B over the next few games. Especially against weaker teams in the last 15 to 20 minutes where defenders will have been run ragged by Valencia and Sakho and on several bookings. I'm pretty sure, had Carroll come on instead of Cole yesterday, Kompany would have finally got a red card and been off.

In fact Carroll and Nolan / Zarate could be deadly now we have decent full backs, who can cross a ball, they will be like foxes in a chicken coop. At the very least Carroll gives us an extra tall defender when our backs are against the wall. We can't always rely on Ginge.

Re: Andy Carroll, back in training but does he have a role in our new look side.
I think there is a place for Carroll.

The emphasis of our change in fortune is movement. The front four have more fluidity between them and it's clear that the front line are interchangeable going forward.

Carroll can play within a three as more of a target man and will be guaranteed to be marked by at least one player - giving space for the others to capitalise.

It's also clear that in Cresswell, we've found an half decent crosser. That gives us the option of changing between ground and aerial attacks, which will stop us becoming predictable.

We've not been sussed out yet, but that will happen eventually. Carroll's return, whether as an impact sub, or as part of a lineup will do us good.

If Allardyce really compares himself to Ferguson etc in terms of picking a team and tactics to cope with each individual opponent; we will really see how that claim works out. I wouldn't start Carroll every week (even if fully fit all season); purely because like every club that has a big lump up top; there is a tendency to get impatient (especially at home where teams sit back and wait for us) and before you know it the long ball football returns.

There will be teams that lack that height and physicality at the back (Newcastle, Everton, Arsenal etc) where we can use Carroll as a battering ram to open space and draw defenders out of position.

Keep him.

Re: Andy Carroll, back in training but does he have a role in our new look side.
Of course.

He is as good at what he does when fit as any target striker in the game.

I even think it might be best to start him and bring Valencia or Sakho on after 60 minutes.

We have a proper team right now when everyone is fit.
